Take the door off it's hinges, put it flat on the current dining room table but hanging over the edge with a large weight on the part of the door thats over the table. e.g. your spare tyre and get the wife to stick some sprigs of holly around to make a table decoration !
The practical answer is to put the oval table away, or push it to the side and use it for drinks etc.
Then get some collapsable tables and use those instead. Covered in cloths and seasonal bits and bobs you won't notice the difference.
Costco do large sturdy foldable tables for about £39. Two of those end to end should sit 10 to 12.
Either that or put a small table off the straight age of your oval table making a T shape; but you need a square room to do that.
