Don't know if its doable. I guess not because if it was the ability to have text messages on the screen would be the same and everyone would know about it.
With limited technological knowledge, I would have thought that it should be. Given that I can get my call lists on the screen, is it more difficult to get texts?

It is technically possible, but it doesn't do it! (I don't have a Juke yet..). I have the BB 8520 and love it.
Maybe it just takes a bit of getting used to.
There was a software upgrade that made the BBM icon disappear. You should find it in the download folder; if not just download it again from BB app world.
One way to find any "lost" icons is to press the BB symbol button twice and make sure the "Show all folders" is ticked. That way if any have become "hidden" you can see them and move them or take the "hide" option off.

I have a bb 9800 and love it. Sounds like you have a bad phone. You say it was a used phone, but do you know it's history? Dropped? Water damage?

I'm willing to think it's been dropped.

yup, I too have a 9800 and its great. except for wifi connections lol.
I would perform a full memory wipe and upgrade the firmware
